Macro Mamas was mindfully conceived in the hills of the Finger Lakes Region in 1992. The first seeds were cast into the soil between Seneca and Cayuga Lakes, an offering later rewarded by modest gardens. Our first market season began with a small selection of macrobiotically prepared foods, sourced primarily from our own harvest. As the business began to thrive, we could no longer rely on our supply alone, so we purchased additional produce directly from local organic farmers, who embraced many of our own sustainable practices.
Fortunately, we are blessed with a wealth of such farmers in this area. They provide us with an abundance of fresh produce and in turn we are able to create vibrant and delicious dishes. Our current gardens bring herbs, edible flowers, fruits, and the occasional unique vegetable to our table. As the season’s bounty changes, so does our menu. Each dish prepared in our kitchen highlights the strengths of the season as well as the kitchen’s own playful energy.
We believe that serving organically grown and seasonally prepared ingredients supports both the long-term health of the Finger Lakes bioregion and the nutritional wellbeing of our neighbors. We delight in the process of transforming the separate energies of whole foods into collective meals because we feel that it helps to sustain the interconnectedness of our community. When body and mind are nourished by quality food, we are better equipped to engage thoughtfully with one another.
If you peek into the Macro Mamas kitchen, you will find a group of women – natural foods chefs, gardeners, artists, and writers – cheerfully merging their talents in order to create fantastic market menus. No menu is the same as the last. Our plant-based cuisine is as fluid as the personalities we house in our kitchen. Each dish is its own exercise in co-creation, welcoming newfound inspiration and varied ingredients, from our own fresh herbs to plants foraged from nearby hillsides. And of course, all of it is lovingly prepared from scratch.
We hope that you will join us in our quest to nourish ourselves, our loved ones, our communities, and our land.
